Eight dead, three missing in south China road collapse

The accident happened in downtown Foshan, in Guangdong Province, around 20:40 Wednesday, at a section of the road that was under construction for Foshan Subway’s Line 2. Eight people were killed on the spot and three others went missing, said the city’s transport authorities.

Nine other people were injured and are currently still hospitalized; however, their conditions are stable.

The collapsed area is about the size of two basketball courts and is 6-7 meters deep. In order to prevent further accidents and damage to the road, the area leading up to the section has been placed under traffic controls.

The cause of the collapse is still under investigation.
