Laws have failed, say Florida survivors in push to limit gun sales

The Feb. 14 massacre, the latest in a long series of deadly U.S. school shootings, stirred the nation’s long-running debate about gun rights and public safety, prompting officials from state lawmakers to U.S. President Donald Trump to consider new action.

Florida lawmakers in Tallahassee said they would consider raising the age limit to 21, the same standard for handguns and alcohol, though the state Senate on Wednesday opted not to take up a gun control measure.

Florida Senate President Joe Negron, a Republican, met with students and declined to answer their questions on whether he would support any specific gun control measures.

“They need to talk about it the time is now, people keep saying let the families grieve but the families want, they want justice for their children,” said 16-year-old Stoneman sophomore Zoey Fox-Snider.

“I already had very little faith in my government already by the more and more I see these guys weasel their way out of a simple question is just deplorable from a human standard,” added Ryan Deitsch, an 18-year-old senior from Stoneman.

The protests come one week after 17 students and educators were shot and killed by a gunman with an AR-15 semiautomatic assault rifle.
