Former Italian PM Berlusconi casts ballot in Milan as Femen activist disrupts voting

Berlusconi queued inside his polling station in Milan before he was able to vote. But as he entered the room a Femen activist jumped on the table and shouted: “You’ve passed your expiry date. Your time’s up!”

After the activist was escorted out by police officers, Berlusconi said: “She left so quickly I didn’t get a change to see her,” before casting his ballot and leaving the polling station.

Berlusconi’s centre-right coalition, which includes the far-right League (Lega) and Brothers of Italy (Fratelli d’Italia), is expected to win the most seats but fall short of a working majority, but he cannot personally stand for office because of a 2013 conviction for tax fraud.

The four-time prime minister named on Tuesday (February 27) European President Antonio Tajani, a Forza Italia co-founder in 1994, as his preferred premier candidate. Tajani later confirmed on Twitter that he would be willing to stand as prime minister.
