USA are World Champions in women’s team pursuit

Despite the presence of experienced duo Katie Archibald and the returning Laura Kenny the GB team began with an advantage but it was whittled down by the U.S. team who held fast to the end for a 1.311 second win.

The Great Britain men’s pursuit team however took a convincing win against Denmark with amateur Charlie Tanfield winning a world title on his first appearance for the national team.

Tanfield, 21, forced his way into the national squad despite operating outside the heavily funded and hugely successful British Cycling set up after some startling performances in the national championships last year and has had to defer his university education to chase the unexpected opportunity.

The Danish team of Niklas Larsen, Julius Johansen, Frederik Madsen and Casper von Folsach went hard early on for a quick advantage but then faded.

Triple Olympic pursuit champion Clancy, about to become 33 years old, said he loved competing alongside the new generation of British riders as world champion debutants Kian Emadi and Ethan Hayter completed a new-look team.

There was a big surprise in the men’s scratch race as Yauheni Karaliok of Belarus snatched gold after stealing a lap alongside Michele Scartezzini of Italy and Australia’s Callum Scotson and kept his nose in front over the final laps.

There was another upset in the keirin as Colombia’s Fabian Hernando Puertas Zapata took gold after riding an astute race to breeze past Maximilian Levy of Germany and Harrie Lavreysen of Netherlands. Fast finishing Momoyuki Kawabata of Japan nearly took the gold but had to be content with silver.
