Re-elected Russian leader appeared before the media in his campaign headquarters in Moscow after a predictably resounding win and called for the unification of the nation.
Putin said that Russia needs a breakthrough to face the uneasy tasks ahead, adding that different political powers must be governed by national interest before self-interest.
Putin has also promised to use his new term to beef up Russia’s defence against the West and to raise living standards.
Putin’s victory will take his political dominance of Russia to nearly a quarter of a century, until 2024, by which time he will be 71. Only Soviet dictator Josef Stalin ruled for longer.
