India’s Golden Temple gets new golden plates ahead of harvest festival

Chief of ‘Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee’ (SGPC), a managing organization of Indian ‘Gurduwaras’, Roop Singh said on Sunday (April 08) that the work is being done to attract more tourists before the harvest festival as that is the time of year when the shrine gets a rush of visitors.

Golden Temple, also known as Sri Harmandir Sahib, is a revered spiritual site of Sikhism and is thronged by close to 100,000 devotees on a daily basis.

Vaisakhi also marks the Punjabi New Year. People dress up in traditional wear and perform folk dance commonly known as ‘Bhangra’. Processions through towns are also a part of the custom. Sikhs make up about 2 percent of Hindu-majority India’s population of 1.2 billion but they have a majority in Punjab.
