Trudeau touches down in Peru for Americas Summit

The event is likely to gain less regional attention after U.S. President Donald Trump, who has made disparaging comments about Latin American immigrants, canceled his attendance. But Trudeau’s presence gives it some star power.

Venezuela is expected to be one of the top issues at the Summit, with nations calling for greater regional pressure on President Nicolas Maduro ahead of elections many have dubbed undemocratic.

In the past, the summit has got more attention from what happens on the sidelines rather than the agreements themselves. The 2012 gathering in Cartagena, Colombia, for example, was dominated by a scandal over U.S. Secret Service agents hiring prostitutes.
