Christopher Lopez, 48, was indicted on Monday for charges linked to the deadly car crash that killed 45-year-old Silvia Zavala on New Year’s Day.
Lopez turned himself in the same day charges were filled and had his first court appearance Tuesday morning.
On January 1st a 14-year old and a group of friends were throwing eggs at cars as they drove down Aldine Mail Route. That’s when authorizes say Lopez caught the teens in their act, then allegedly pulled out a gun and gave chase, causing both cars to speed a 100MPH.
This caused the 14-year old to run a red light and crash into Zavala’s pick-up truck, she died instantly on the scene. Witnesses nearby say they saw Lopez flee the scene while running another red light.
Lopez has no criminal history, but he now faces three-second degree felonies that include manslaughter, failure to stop and render aid and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
His bond was set at $60,000 for all three charges. The judge raised concerns about Lopez being a risk to public safety and flight risk.
Lopez posted bond Tuesday morning.
If convicted, Lopez faced up to 20 years in prison.
