Seeking Justice For Jazmine Barnes

By: Paige Hubbard

Seven-year-old Jasmine Barnes was shot and killed Sunday morning while she and her family were driving near a Wal-Mart in northeast Harris County.

Surveillance footage shows a red four-door pick-up truck pulling alongside the vehicle, then firing several shots into the car per a report from the Harris County Sheriff’s office.

Jasmine’s mother, LaPorsha Washington was shot in the arm and Jasmine’s sister was injured by a piece of glass.

Her mother is still in the hospital recovering from the gun wounds.

“As I turned around and looked back at the street, I heard shots start firing and they came through my window, broke my glass, and hit me in my arm. They sped off in front of us and the truck slowed down and continued to fire as he was in front of us. It was not fair. It was not fair. He intentionally killed my child for no reason. He didn’t even know her, he didn’t know who she was,” said Jasmine’s mother as tears rolled down her face while she laid in her hospital bed.

The incident has since gained national attention from many Houston public figures, activist and celebrities who have urged everyone to come together and help find justice for Jasmine. Activist Shaun King announced via Twitter that he has a $25,000 reward for anyone that can help find the man who committed such a heinous crime.

The reward increased from $25,000 to $50,000 and now stands at whopping $100,000 in just a matter of hours. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office is asking all residents in the area where the shooting happened to check their security cameras for any leads that may help find Jasmine’s killer.

Jasmine is set to be buried on Tuesday and Texans NFL player Deandre Hopkins has donated his playoff check to Jasmine’s family to help cover the funeral cost.

The motive behind the shooting is unknown.

Anyone with information is urged to call 713-274-9100 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
