The “my hips don’t lie” singer has been asked to appear in a Spanish court for allegedly not paying $14.5 million in euros, which equates to $16.5 million in U.S dollars.
Back in December prosecutors filed charges against her on the grounds that she had failed to pay taxes on her earnings from 2012 to 2014 while she lived in the Catalonia region.
However, the singers’ representative released a statement saying that she did not live in Spain until 2015 and by that time she met all of her tax requirement responsibilities.
Now Shakira is not the only celebrity in the hot seat for tax matters. Her partner Gerard Pique who plays football for Barcelona team-mate Lionel Messi faced the same legal matters.
He was found guilty, along with his father, of a 4.1 million euro tax fraud in 2016 and was fined 250,000 euros as well as paying back the missing tax plus interest.
Shakira court date is scheduled for this summer in June.
