Passenger who missed Ethiopian flight recalls moment he found out about plane crash

Ahmed Khalid’s father had received no news from his son who was meant to be on board the fatal plane. Travelling from Dubai, Ahmed was due to change planes in Addis Ababa and continue en route to Nairobi, but a delay in Dubai caused him to miss flight ET 302 and he had to wait for another connection. He learned about the crash when he was on board his plane to Nairobi.

Flight ET 302 left Bole airport in Addis Ababa at 8:38 a.m. (0538 GMT), before losing contact with the control tower just a few minutes later at 8:44 a.m.

Passengers from 33 countries were aboard, according to Ethiopian Airlines Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Tewolde GebreMariam. The dead included Kenyan, Ethiopian, American, Canadian, French, Chinese, Egyptian, Swedish, British, Dutch, Indian, Slovakian, Austrian, Swedish, Russian, Moroccan, Spanish, Polish, and Israeli citizens.

The cause of that crash is still under investigation.
