Indonesian Muslims attend prayers marking the start of Ramadan

The beginning of Ramadan, during which observers abstain from food and drink from dawn until sunset, can sometimes fall on different dates due to regional differences in the exact timing of the beginning of the month and different interpretations of the calendar and religious opinions.

Ramadan begins on Monday (May 6) in Indonesia, and Muslims marked this with Taraweeh prayers on the night before.

Concerns about rising hardline Islamic sentiment have been mounting in Indonesia, where Muslims vastly outnumber other religious groups.

Most recently by two suicide bombings that killed three Indonesian police officers and injured 10 people on Wednesday (May 24) night in twin blasts near a bus station in Jakarta.
