Lobodzinski and Walsham win race to the top of Empire State Building

By: Lauren Leal

It was an epic run on Tuesday (May 14) for Polish athlete Piotr Lobodzinski who beat more than 200 competitors in the race to the top of New York’s Empire State Building in just 10 minutes 6 seconds.

Suzy Walsham, a native of Australia now residing in Singapore, made history by placing first in the women’s race, achieving her tenth win at the New York Skyscrapper.

The race goes up 86 flights of stairs – 1576 steps – to reach the storied building’s observation deck.

Legendary marathoner Meb Keflezighi said sprinting to the door at the beginning would give runners momentum, but competitors needed to be measured and patient to make it to the top.

The annual Empire State Building Run-Up, now in its 42nd year, is an annual fundraiser for disability charities. This year’s run benefits the Challenged Athletes Foundation, which helps to raise awareness and donations to ease access to adaptive sports equipment and athletic training and mentoring for people with physical challenges.
