Six die in New York apartment fire

According to NBC, the fire broke out about 01:30 EDT (0530 GMT) in a ninth floor apartment in the city’s Harlem neighborhood.

New York City Fire Department Commissioner Daniel Nigro said when firefighters gained access to the apartment, the residents were already dead.

“Units were met at the door of that apartment with fire. The entire apartment was involved. They aggressively moved in, extinguishing the fire as they did. When they reached the two rear bedrooms, we found six occupants of that apartment deceased. They were two adults and four children ranging in ages from 3 to 11,” said Nigro.

According to NBC, it took firefighters about two hours to get the blaze under control. The cause of the fire is unknown but there are no signs the fire was set intentionally, according to NBC.
