SPRING, TX – A woman has been apprehended after investigators say she stole the identity of Houston Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta.
Identified as Stephanie Renee Hunter, 27 she is said to have used the billionaire’s social security number and other sensitive information last September sometime to open several accounts. Hunter is being accused of applying for multiple credit cards under the mogul’s name.
Fertitta was contacted by LifeLock, a credit card monitoring company that informed him that someone had used his information to open up a Capital One account for $15,000. Officials began their investigation and were presented with red flags when they noticed the email and physical address listed on the application did not match Fertitta’s.
Precinct 1 investigated the address listed and discovered Hunter lived at the home. In October of 2019 Hunter was arrested for marijuana possession. She was tracked down and interviewed regarding the accounts and admitted to buying his personal information, including his social online and applying for listed accounts. Hunter applied for a $5,000 Conn’s card that reports say she initially opened to buy furniture but never used.
Hunter was charged with fraud and released on a $10,000 bond. She is due back in court next month.
