U.S. President Donald Trump landed in Delhi on Monday (February 24) during his first official visit to India.
Earlier in the day, police used tear gas and smoke grenades in the city to disperse thousands of people demonstrating for and against a new citizenship law just before Trump’s maiden visit.
The latest round of violence came just as Trump began his two-day visit, addressing a rally in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state of Gujarat.
Trump told the gathering of more than 100,000 people that “India is a country that proudly embraces freedom, liberty, individual rights, the rule of law, and the dignity of every human being”.
Later, Trump and his entourage which includes daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner flew to Agra to see the Taj Mahal at sunset.
