Florida Governor Ron DeSantis on Monday (March 2) said he anticipated more people would test positive for the coronavirus in the state amid two presumptive cases identified over the weekend.
“Despite these cases, the overall immediate threat to the public remains low,” he added during a news conference at the Florida Department of Health Tampa Branch Laboratory.
Florida has declared a public health emergency and is urging travelers returning from coronavirus-infected countries – including South Korea, Italy and South Korea – to take precautions to avoid spreading the disease.
“If you are returning from these areas, we are asking that you self-isolate for 14 days after returning,” said State Surgeon General Dr. Scott Rivkees.
Some officials bumped elbows instead of shaking hands upon arrival in order to limit the spread of germs.
