Former Harris County Judge pleads guilty to wire fraud

HARRIS COUNTY, TX – A former Harris County Judge pled guilty to embezzling funds received during her re-election campaigns back in 2012 and 2016.

Judge Alexandra Smoots-Thomas, 44, appeared in court Thursday where she pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud.

Smoots-Thomas was the presiding judge for the 164th District Court for the State of Texas and had jurisdiction over Texas civil cases located within Harris County. She admitted to using her campaign funds for personal expenses including her monthly home mortgage, children’s tuition fees, and personal luxury items.

The court head argued that Smoots-Thomas abused her position of power and asked for a fair sentencing under the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines

Restitution will be determined at her next hearing scheduled for October 26.
