WALLER COUNTY, TX – Waller County residents will elect their newest sheriff next month after an 11-year stint from the late Glenn Smith.
Republican Troy Guidry and Democrat Cedric Watson will go head to head for the position once held by Smith who suffered a fatal heart attack in August.
Guidry is currently an instructor for the Harris County K9 and mounted patrol division.
Watson, a former Hempstead Police Department officer says he hopes to become the county’s first black sheriff. If elected, he said, “Waller County, the community, will see the police as help, as someone who’s there to assist when trouble abounds.”
The county sheriff’s office became the center of scrutiny following the death of 28-year-old Sandra Bland, a woman who was found hanging in her jail cell after being pulled over by police for an improper lane change.
