Houston Police Department salutes its first officer lost to COVID-19

HOUSTON, TX – The first member from the Houston Police Department has lost his battle with COVID-19.

Senior Police Officer Ernest Leal Jr. passed away on Friday after a weeks-long battle with the coronavirus.

Hundreds of HPD officers stood in his honor in a somber ceremony outside the HCA Houston Healthcare North Cypress Hospital while donning black bands over their badges.

Leal’s body was escorted by a motorcade of police motorcycles from the hospital to a nearby funeral home.

Ceremony arrangements have not yet been released.
