Minute Maid Park will host as a statewide mega vaccination center

HOUSTON- The Houston Health Department is partnering up with the Astros Foundation and transforming Minute Maid Park into a statewide mega vaccination center tomorrow, January 16.

This mega site will only provide the first dose of the vaccine at this time.The department plans to vaccinate approximately 5,000 people, through 2,400 pre-scheduled appointments and 2,600 new appointments. 

The new appointment booking became available today at 10 a.m. this morning and just 16 minutes after it opened, all 2,600 of the appointment slots were already filled.

Vaccinations at this site were only available for those who met the Phase 1A or Phase 1B criteria in Texas as well as made an appointment ahead of time.

On Thursday, the health department said they received an additional 8,200 doses of vaccine, bringing its total to 30,350.

As of Thursday, the department said they administered a total of 18,658 doses at multiple locations including:

  • Minute Maid Park 
  • Bayou City Event Center 
  • La Nueva Casa de Amigos
  • Sunnyside health centers

People who receive their first dose from the health department will be contacted and provided information about where to schedule their second dose within the appropriate time frame.

For those who did not sign up in time for this event, the Houston Health department will be creating additional vaccination opportunities as supplies increase.
