U.S. Senate’s Schumer says Trump impeachment trial will be fair but move quickly

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said on Sunday (January 24) that former President Donald Trump’s approaching second impeachment trial in the Senate will be fair but move at a relatively fast pace.

“It will be a fair trial but it will move relatively quickly,” Schumer, a Democrat, told a news conference in New York. He said it should not take up too much time because “we have so much else to do.”

The leaders of the U.S. Senate had agreed on Friday (January 23) to push back Trump’s impeachment trial by two weeks, giving the chamber more time to focus on Democratic President Joe Biden’s legislative agenda and Cabinet nominees before turning to the contentious showdown over Trump.

The Democratic-controlled House of Representatives impeached Trump earlier this month for inciting the January 6 insurrection at the Capitol,

The Senate trial on the charge will begin the week of February 8, Schumer said.
