JJ Watt announces his departure from the Houston Texans after 10 years

HOUSTON – JJ Watt of the Houston Texans, has announced he’s departing the team after 10 years.

In a Twitter video released Friday morning, the three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year announced that he sat down with the McNair family and asked for his release.

The Houston Texans selected Watt with the 11th pick in the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft, and he appeared in 128 games for the team across 10 seasons (2011-20).

Off the field, Watt has always been involved in giving back to the city of Houston in more than one way. In 2017 during Hurricane Harvey Watt raised more than $37 million to help rebuild Houston. This act earned him the prestigious Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award.

The Houston Texans have since then released a statement regarding his departure. Click here to read the full statement.
