Tesla offers glimpse into fully-automated Model Y assembly line at Shanghai gigafactory

Electric car giant Tesla has shared a rare glimpse of its Shanghai Model Y Gigafactory production line, which is fully-automated and incorporates many state-of-the-art features for quality control.

Tesla is pushing the Model Y in China this year, with the electric car maker promoting the all-electric crossover as an ideal vehicle for families that value utility and safety.

A reporter with Shanghai Media Group recently visited Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory for an inside tour of Model Y’s assembly process.

Unlike common assembly lines, the sections of the main production line of Model Y are distributed on two floors to make full use of space.

There are many elevators that can easily move unfinished cars, and workers are aided by robotic arms to assemble car parts such as dashboards.

To improve vehicle air tightness, a robotic arm spreads glue on particular sections first and technicians will then add the finer touches.

Advanced technologies are incorporated into some ordinary-looking wrenches to ensure that car parts are assembled with precision.

“This wrench can record and transmit data. So it would record the number of rotations and the torque just now instantaneously and send them to a server. The computer would tell the technician whether they were right. If there was a problem, it would notify the technician immediately. If not, then he could go ahead,” said Liu Yang, director of Tesla’s training department.

Finished cars are inspected twice to enhance quality control.

During the first inspection, workers check the car from a technician’s viewpoint. Afterwards they will move on to assess the car’s performance from a customer’s perspective.

The Tesla Shanghai Gigafactory is China’s first wholly foreign-owned vehicle manufacturing project, and it is also Tesla’s first gigafactory outside the United States.
