Funeral services were held on Friday (April 30) for 16-year-old Ma’Khia Bryant who died ten days ago following a confrontation with police in Columbus, Ohio, in which body-camera video appeared to show her holding a knife and lunging toward two people.
Mourners gathered to celebrate the teenagers life and highlighted her personality and called for reforms in policing.
Don Bryant, Ma’khia’s cousin, described her as having “a loving kindness to her personality” adding “the light shined bright around her.”
Bryant was shot around the same time a Minneapolis jury convicted a white former police officer of murdering George Floyd last year by kneeling on his neck.
Police arriving encountered a chaotic scene of several people on the front lawn where Bryant, brandishing a knife, charged toward one person who falls backwards, then lunged at a second person, the video showed.
Her shooting triggered immediate protests in Columbus, Ohio’s state capital, just as the announcement of the guilty verdict in the Floyd case brought relief and jubilation to the Minnesota city.
