Indian factories ramp up oxygen production to help fight COVID surge

Oxygen manufacturing units in India have dramatically increased production to meet demand for the gas as hospitals face shortages in the face of the country’s COVID-19 surge.

Factories in Jammu have been told by authorities to double their manufacturing capacity and work 24 hours a day as hospitals are struggling to secure enough of the gas to treat COVID patients

“If the unit is operating for 12 hours, then it should operate 24 hours in these crucial times,” said Ajay Langer, the vice president of Bari Brahmana Industrial Association on Friday (April 23).

Meanwhile, long queues of empty oxygen cylinders lined up for refilling were seen outside a manufacturing unit in Rajkot, as the country faces a sharp rise in new daily COVID-19 infections.

India on Friday (April 23) recorded the world’s highest number of daily infections from the virus for the second day in a row, with 332,730 new cases and 2,263 deaths.
