Members of The Houston Fire Department’s Wildland Team Volunteer to Provide Relief to Panola County Residents

HOUSTON – On March 27th a devastating storm consisting of multiple EF-2 tornados, tore through parts of Panola county, resulting in the death of one person, injuries to several others and widespread damage throughout the southern half of the county.

Members of the Houston Fire Department’s Wildland Team volunteered their time and experience for two-days, clearing debris, removing hazards, and restoring access to the residents of Panola County. These members traveled to Panola in personal vehicles, paying for their own meals and lodging.

“I don’t have the words to express the gratitude we feel for these employees, “ said Fire Chief Samuel Peña.  “This was an incredible example of service by members of our HFD Wildland Firefighter program.  Their actions had a meaningful and measurable impact on families and communities affected by this event.  It is not that these Houston firefighters necessarily have the time, as much as they have the Heart to serve.”
The HFD members were able to exercise and practice their skills attained through the HFD Wildland program, as well as further develop their selves as qualified members of the Houston Fire Department.

“This was an opportunity for us to volunteer our time and give back by aiding a community devastated by a tornado,” said Engineer Operator Chris Mixon, a member of the HFD Wildland Team.
