‘No reasonable’ officer would have used force against George Floyd – expert witness.

An expert on the use of force by police officers testified Monday (April 12) in the trial of former officer Derek Chauvin that “no reasonable officer” would have acted the way Chauvin did while arresting George Floyd.

“No reasonable officer would have believed that that was an appropriate, acceptable, or reasonable use of force,” Seth Stoughton, a law professor and former police officer said in testimony for the prosecution.

Chauvin’s lawyers have argued that Floyd’s death, which the medical examiner ruled a homicide at the hands of police, was really a drug overdose.

Chauvin, who is white, and other officers were arresting Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man, on suspicion of his using a fake $20 bill to buy cigarettes at a grocery store. The arrest prompted protests against racism and police brutality in many cities in the United States and around the world.

The judge in the case indicated that closing arguments in the trial are expected next week, and that the jury will be sequestered as the review evidence and reach a verdict.
