Oxygen plants in India scaling up production as pandemic rages on

Oxygen plants in India are being pushed to their limits as demand is outpacing supply as the country aims to manage the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

A large queue was seen at an oxygen plant in Lucknow, capital of India’s most populous Uttar Pradesh state, with people from private hospitals, isolation centres, and even individuals visiting the plant with their empty cylinders in the hopes of getting some gas for patients.

Oxygen production and filling facilities down south in Kerala state are also overburdened with high-demand. They have shut regular industrial filling of oxygen and are only focused on filling up cylinders for medical oxygen.

Meanwhile in New Delhi, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, chaired a meeting to review steps taken to boost oxygen availability in the country.

He stressed that there was an immediate need to augment the supply of medical-grade oxygen as well as equipment required for patient care both at home and in hospitals.

The country of around 1.3 billion has now recorded a total of 16.6 million cases, including 189,544 deaths.
