Police confirm former detective suspected of killing three people in Texas

Police confirmed on Sunday (April 18) that the suspect in the shooting deaths of three people in Austin, Texas, is a former police detective and confirmed that it was a “domestic situation” as they reduced the massive police presence in the area, saying it had been in response to a possible active shooter.

“This is not an active shooter situation. We are not calling it that at this point,” said Austin interim police Chief Joseph Chacon. ?This appears to be a domestic incident and the victims were all known to our suspect. So at this point, we do not think that this individual is out targeting random people to shoot them. That does not mean he is not dangerous. He still, he is still at large. We do think that he is armed and he is very much dangerous.”

The killings in an apartment complex, which followed a spate of mass shootings in the United States, prompted authorities to lock down the surrounding area, which includes a popular shopping complex in the northwest part of the city, which is the capital of Texas.

Chacon confirmed that 41-year-old Stephen Broderick, who authorities have named as a suspect, was a Travis County Sheriff’s Office detective.

Last June, a Travis County detective by that name was placed on administrative leave after being charged with sexual assault of a child, local media reported at the time.

Killed at the scene of the shooting, which was reported shortly before noon CDT, were two women and a man, Chacon said.

Shortly after the three victims were discovered, the Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services Department reported that “no additional patients have been reported or located at this time.”

Police said the search for the shooter is ongoing.
