A couple of passersby stopped at Black Lives Matter Plaza in Washington on Tuesday (April 20), not realizing the verdict in the trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin in the death of George Floyd was about to be announced.
They wondered why all those news crews were wandering about. Before too long, London Williams and Stephanie Toledo listened to the broadcast of the trial on their cell phone.
As each verdict was read, London Williams, a Black man who was visiting the plaza not far from the White House, heard the words he never expected to hear: “Guilty on count one … guilty on count two … and guilty on count three.”
Williams broke down in tears, comforting himself in joy in the arms of his companion.
“Thank you, Jesus,” he whispered to himself.
