Trump says migrant surge at U.S. border ‘could destroy our country’

Former U.S. president Donald Trump, on Monday (April 19), said that the surge of migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border “could destroy our country”. In his first major interview since leaving office, Trump claimed that his administration had had the situation under control and that all President Biden “had to do is leave it alone”

“If he left it alone, we were setting record positive numbers and people would have to come in legally,” he told Fox News host Sean Hannity.

The Biden administration’s efforts to reverse Trump’s restrictive border policies to deport illegal immigrants, keep asylum seekers in Mexico and complete construction of a border wall, have been accompanied by an upswing in border arrivals, thrusting Biden into an emerging humanitarian and political crisis within his first 100 days in office. Many of the migrants are unaccompanied minors who have been packed into crowded border patrol stations as they wait to be released to their U.S. sponsors, often parents and close relatives, who seek to take them in.
