‘We want asylum,’ Migrants protest at Mexico border city, seeking entry to U.S.

A large group of migrants protested at the U.S. border in the northwest Mexican city of Tijuana on Saturday (April 24), demanding they be allowed to cross and claim asylum in the United States.

Migrants marched to the San Ysidro Port of entry chanting and holding up handmade signs that read, “We want answers, we want asylum.”

U.S. authorities, including police in anti-riot gear, closed the border, prompting long delays of more than four hours to cross the border between San Diego and Tijuana.

Hundreds of migrants have been living at a makeshift campsite just south of the border since mid-February waiting to apply for political asylum in the U.S.

President Joe Biden has raised a new policy meant to end the hardships endured by migrants in dangerous border towns.

Hundreds of migrants wait anxiously to cross into the U.S. as Biden’s administration is treading carefully in its efforts to process asylum seekers, wary that the policy shift could encourage more migrants to trek to the U.S.-Mexico border.
