India receives second batch of Russia’s COVID-19 Sputnik vaccine

India received the second consignment of Sputnik-V vaccine doses from Russia on Sunday (May 16) as the world’s biggest producer of COVID-19 vaccines has a limited number of shots available.

India’s catastrophic second wave of the pandemic has led to a huge demand for vaccines, which in turn has left the country, the world’s biggest vaccine producer, low on stocks.

Sputnik V is a two-dose shot that has been found to be 91.6% effective in preventing people from developing COVID-19, a higher efficacy rate than the two vaccines currently approved in India.

India’s rampant second wave of COVID-19 topped 3,11,170 new daily cases on Sunday. Deaths from COVID-19 jumped by 4,077, taking the total toll in India to 270,284, according to federal health ministry data.
