India turns hostels, schools into COVID-19 centres for rural patients

India’s Gujarat state has turned vacant schools and hostels in rural areas into makeshift COVID-19 care centres amid rising cases of the pandemic ripping through the country’s villages.

Madhav Nagar has converted a girls’ hostel and schools into care centres for non-critical coronavirus patients. One such centre currently has 13 patients, with several of them aged 45 or above.

An acute shortage of beds in hospitals in the cities prompted the conversion, especially for patients from rural areas where there is a dearth of hygienic quarantine centres and health infrastructure.

The health centre at Madhav Nagar village has reported no deaths so far, and about 50 to 52 patients treated at the centre in the last month were sent home healthy, said Dr. Push Rajshri Vaghela.

According to health ministry data Gujarat has a total of 62,506 active cases of the coronavirus, while the whole country has had 27.16 million cases and 311,388 deaths.
