Turkish state security guards, known as night watchmen, fired gunshots into the air to disperse Besiktas fans late on Saturday (May 15) who were breaching COVID-19 lockdown to celebrate their team’s Turkish Super league title success.
Video released by Turkish social media newsfeed @KoronaReport, showed night watchmen, who have some policing powers, firing into air to quell the crowds.
Thousands of Besiktas fans flocked to the street late on Saturday, despite a 17-day coronavirus lockdown, to mark their team winning the league title for the 16th time. Besiktas secured the championship with a 2-1 win away to Goztepe, clinching the title on goal difference ahead of their Istanbul rivals Galatasaray in a tense end to the season.
The win lifted Besiktas to 84 points, level with Galatasaray who beat Yeni Malatyaspor 3-1. Besiktas’s goal difference of 45 was one better than their rivals. Third-placed Fenerbahce ended the season on 82 points.
