Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in a fatal crash at 7900 Westheimer Road about 8:30 p.m. on Thursday (July 29).

The suspect, Walter Dewayne Petties (b/m, 21), is charged with failure to stop and render aid in the — State District Court.  A booking photo of Petties is attached to this news release.

The identity of the male victim, 44, is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant P. Pham and Officer C. Brothers reported:

The victim was crossing the street – in a crosswalk – when he was struck by a gray Honda Accord traveling westbound.  The driver of the Honda, later identified as Petties, did not stop to render assistance, but pulled into a nearby driveway, called 9-1-1 then fled the scene on foot.  Houston Fire Department paramedics responded to the scene and pronounced the victim deceased.

Petties returned to the scene approximately two hours later with family members.  He was taken into custody and subsequently charged for his role in the crash.
