Australians celebrated Brisbane being named the host city of the 2032 Olympics Summer Games on Wednesday (July 21).
Hundreds of Brisbane locals watched the announcement on a big screen at a live site at South Bank in the city. Strict lockdowns in three of Australia’s six states due to COVID-19 outbreaks limited the nationwide celebrations.
Queensland’s Gold Coast hosted the 2018 Commonwealth Games and Australia will become only the second country after the United States to host Summer Games in three different cities.
Melbourne held the Games in 1956 and Sydney hosted them in 2000.
Queensland state Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and the Australian delegation had earlier provided a final presentation to IOC members in Tokyo before the vote.
Queensland’s state capital had been the preferred host, chosen in February, and had earned the nod of the executive board last month.
