Clashes erupt over local election nominations in India’s Uttar Pradesh

Clashes broke out in several districts of India’s Uttar Pradesh state on Thursday (July 8) as candidates were filing their nominations for the Block Pramukh elections in 825 blocks or heads of district sub-divisions.

Police said one person was injured in the clashes as supporters of each candidate from the BJP and the independent party went on the rampage around the car of one of the candidates in the Sitapur district of India’s most populous state.

There was more violence in different parts of Uttar Pradesh including Basti where police went on a baton charge and Bijnor where one candidate was assaulted by protesters.

“They they were trying to snatch the nomination papers. They tore the papers”, said Kusum Devi, independent canditate in Bijnor.

Local media have reported that Samajwardi Party supporters have alleged their candidates were not allowed to file for nomination because of the BJP and their supporters, claiming the police were supporting the ruling party candidates.

The BJP has denied the claims saying in some districts their candidates were simply unopposed.

The United News of India said “the dispute with the BJP emerged after the leadership allowed there would be no official candidate of the party in several seats and the winner would be adopted by the party.”

Elections for the posts of 826 block chiefs in Uttar Pradesh will be held on July 10.
