Ledecky confirms Paris ambitions, doesn’t rule out 2028 swim

Katie Ledecky wants to add to her Olympic medal haul at Paris 2024 – and doesn’t rule out swimming at her home games in LA in 2028.

The 24-year-old American won two golds and two silvers at Tokyo 2020, taking her overall medal count to 10 after she won four golds and a silver in Rio, and a single gold at London. No female swimmer has won more golds.

In Japan she won the 800m freestyle and the inaugural 1500m freestyle, taking silver in the 400m freestyle and the 4x200m freestyle relay. She also developed a compelling rivalry with Ariarne Titmus, the Australian inflicting Ledecky’s first loss in an individual event at an Olympics.

Michael Phelps has 28 Olympic medals so the overall record for Ledecky is still some way off, but she has a great chance to add to her collection in Paris.

“I think I’ve been pretty clear that 2024 is in the picture for me and I bring 2028 up, but I want to make it clear that I’m not promising anything,” Ledecky told reporters at a news conference on Saturday (July 31).

“I definitely want to event through 2024, just evaluate where I’m at in life at every step, of course, and so yeah, I want to go to Paris and I want to keep representing our country at this level, and it would be an honour to go to a fourth games, and it would be an honour to go to fifth games and compete on home soil.

“I know how unique that is, and how special that is to the people that get to do that, so its an honour. I mean maybe I’ll just be in the stands in LA, who knows, but the Olympics is has been a huge part of my life, and yeah I’ve really enjoyed it.”

Ledecky also said she was far from disappointed with being beaten by Titmus.

“I’m very proud of two golds and two silvers, of course I’m always competing to win, I dive in every race hoping to get my hand of the wall first,” she said.

“I was very happy with my four hundred free where I went my second best time ever, and really competed, and I think put myself in the race and the good way.”
