The hopes of dozens of Guatemalan migrants for a better life in the United States were dashed on Wednesday (August 4) after they were flown home after being deported.
According to Guatemalan official, this is the third flight of deportees from the United States this week. Young families with children made up the majority of deportees on Wednesday.
Many had hoped President Joe Biden’s approach to immigration would allow for these migrants to stay in the U.S.
Marvin Soto, his wife and young daughter are among the deportees. He told Reuters that the family had sold almost all their belongings to help pay people smugglers to take them to the United States. They are returning back to Guatemala with nothing to show for their search for the American dream.
Hunger and poverty are spurring their flight. So is disinformation that has rocketed across social media and by word of mouth that the U.S. border is open under the Biden administration.
