Kohli says India will look for wickets not runs when replacing injured all-rounder Thakur

Seamer Shardul Thakur will miss the second test against England that starts at Lord’s on Thursday (August 12) due to a hamstring injury, India skipper Virat Kohli said on the eve of the match.

Thakur, who picked up four wickets in the first test at Trent Bridge, did not train with the team this week but should be fit for the third test at Headingley.

The touring side have the option of replacing Thakur with either a spinning all-rounder in Ravichandran Ashwin or a fourth seamer in Ishant Sharma.

England, meanwhile, have injury troubles of their own, with seamer Stuart Broad set to miss out due to a calf problem and fellow pacer James Anderson doubtful with a tight quad.

England have added spin all-rounder Moeen Ali to their squad for the second match against India at Lord’s as they seek to get their team balance right after the drawn series opener in Nottingham.

Moeen has played only one test in the last two years – against India in Chennai in February this year.

The two sides drew the opening game of the five-match series in Nottingham last week after the final day was called off due to rain without a single ball being bowled.

England and India have both been penalised two points each from their 2021-23 World Test Championship (WTC) tally for maintaining a slow over-rate in the first test.

The points deduction leaves both teams with two points apiece in the WTC standings. They have also been fined 40% of their match fee.
