Louisiana prepares for Hurricane Ida

Residents in parts of Louisiana, on Friday (August 27) stocked up on groceries and prepared sandbags as Hurricane Ida approached.

Louisiana officials said Ida could make landfall as a Category 4 hurricane around Sunday (August 29) afternoon or evening.

If forecasts prove accurate, Ida will end up making U.S. landfall 16 years after the region was devastated by Hurricane Katrina.

“It’s like deja vu, here it comes again. We don’t know how bad it’s going to be. We don’t know water height, water levels yet. We don’t know anything yet. All we know is it’s coming,” said Robert Campo of Campo’s Marina in St. Bernard’s Parish.

New Orleans city officials ordered residents to evacuate areas outside the city’s levee system, with voluntary evacuation notices for the rest of the parish.

Officials in U.S. coastal areas preparing for the storm urged residents to move boats out of harbors and encouraged early evacuations.
