Suspect Arrested, Charged in Fatal Crash at Highway 6

Houston police have arrested a suspect charged in a fatal hit-and-run crash at 2300 State Highway 6 South that occurred about 10:20 p.m. on Thursday (August 19).

The suspect, Gustavo Mendieta Del Valle (H/m, 53), is charged with failure to stop and render aid in the 232nd State District Court.  A booking photo of Mendieta Del Valle is attached to this news release.

The identity of the deceased male is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant P. Pham and Officer D. Vinton reported:

Officers responded to a report of a deceased pedestrian at the above address.  It was discovered the victim attempted to cross Highway 6 at the above address, not in a crosswalk, when he was struck.  The driver fled the scene and did not stop to render aid.  The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.  Investigators believe as many as three other vehicles struck the victim.  None of the drivers stopped to render aid.

About two hours later, Mendieta Del Valle called 911 to report that he had struck “something” while he was driving on Highway 6.  Investigators went to the suspect’s residence and located the suspect and his vehicle.  The vehicle had front and windshield damage.  Mendieta Del Valle was subsequently arrested and charged for his role in the crash.

Anyone with additional information in this case is urged to contact the HPD Hit and Run Unit at 713-247-4072.
