The Texas House of Representatives reached a quorum on Thursday (August 19) after some Democratic lawmakers returned to the House more than a month after leaving the state in protest against a voting measure.
House Speaker Dade Phelan called the House to order and Democratic lawmaker Garnet Coleman delivered the invocation.
Texas is among several Republican-led states pursuing new voting restrictions in the name of enhancing election security.
More than 50 Democratic lawmakers left Texas on July 12, denying the state House of Representatives the quorum required to approve the voting limits.
The lawmakers’ exodus set up one of the most prolonged showdowns over U.S. state bills limiting voting access. Republicans have pushed the measures, citing former President Donald Trump’s baseless claims that voter fraud cost him the November election.
