Biden marks Labor Day with visit to union workers helping in Hurricane recovery

U.S. President Joe Biden marked the U.S. national holiday of Labor Day on Monday (September 6) by meeting with members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), some of whose membership have been helping with hurricane relief in the aftermath of Ida.

Biden posed for pictures with workers from IBEW Local 313, while spending the holiday weekend at his home in Delaware.

“As that old expression goes, ‘I know who brung me to the dance’,” Biden was heard saying into a cell phone while speaking to the mother of one of the union workers in attendance. “I’ve been with the IBEW since I was first elected in 1970. They’ve been with me my whole career and I’ve been with them, too,” he said.

Local 313 was established in 1902 and represents 700 active members who work predominately as inside lineman in industrial and commercial facilities, electrical line construction and the maintenance industry, a Local 313 representative told Reuters.

Members of Local 126, who work in Pennsylvania, Delaware and the Eastern Shore of Maryland, were also there. Those members work predominately as outside linemen, tree-trimmers, equipment operators, and maintenance workers, the representative said.

Local 126 has been convening some of its members to help with residential homes in neighborhoods that were hardest hit by Hurricane Ida, the representative said, including by working on external lines and power grids to restore power.
