Houston Gives Tribute to Legendary Texas Governor

September 23rd marks the 30th anniversary for the inauguration of former Texas Governor Ann Richards.  Fifty “Ann Banners” will be on display on downtown light poles located along Dallas Street near the George R. Brown Convention Center marked by Mayor Sylvester Turner, Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo, Harris County Commissioner Rodney Ellis, and other notables.

The “Ann Banners” made their first appearance last spring in downtown Austin and can now be seen in downtown Dallas, Houston and San Antonio. The banners feature images of the Governor throughout her life and quotes that reflect her force-of-nature character and commitment to “make government look like the people of Texas.”

She is remembered in part for appointing an unprecedented number of women, people of color, Texans with disabilities, and LGBTQ community members to Texas boards and commissions, her bio notes.

Richards championed Texas prison reform, the environment, the arts, and hosted Queen Elizabeth II of England and the Duke of Edinburgh.

A one-woman play based on her life received rave reviews during its 2011 run at the Kennedy Center. Richards also bravely posed on the cover of Texas Monthly on a motorcycle.
