Indian and Australian ministers meet to discuss diplomacy and defence

Australian, Indian foreign, and defence ministers began the inaugural 2+2 ministerial dialogue in New Delhi on Saturday (September 11) to strengthen ties between the two countries.

Australian Foreign Minister Marise Payne and Defence Minister, Peter Dutton arrived in New Delhi on Friday (September 10) for meetings to solidify bilateral, defence and strategic ties.

Payne and Dutton met their Indian counterparts, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and Rajnath Singh and held talks.

“I think it is fair to say that Australia and India have never been closer friends,” said Payne while speaking at the 2+2 ministerial dialogue.

India, United States, Japan and Australia are members of the Quad, an informal group that Washington has been promoting to work as a potential bulwark against China’s increasing political, commercial and military activity in the Indo-Pacific, diplomats say.

The two Australian leaders will call on Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi later in the day.
