New York City police officers responded to a report that several people were trapped in a flooded basement on Sunday (September 5), days after the Northeastern U.S. was deluged with with rain and intense flooding from Hurricane Ida.
Video shows a police officer standing in chest high water in the basement of an apartment complex in Woodside, a neighborhood in Queens, one of the five boroughs that comprise New York City.
The officer, who is not wearing any special water rescue gear, dives below the surface but is unable to reach the trapped individuals.
Rising water and live electrical lines complicated the search and police eventually had to bring in a specialized unit.
Professional divers found three people who drowned in the flooding, police said.
High water and heavy rain from Ida has left at least 57 dead and four missing in the eastern United States.
