Devotees in Nepal celebrate Hindu festival of Dashain

In celebration of the Hindu festival of Dashain, devotees in Nepal on Friday (October 15) placed a layer of cow dung on themselves and lit candles as they thanked God for answering their prayers.

The festival is the highlight of the religious calendar in Nepal, during which Hindu devotees celebrate victory over evil.

Worshippers were seen in Bhaktapur city lying under the cow dung, as others lit candles to mark the occasion.

“People do this ritual to ask for something from God, seek blessings or they do this ritual as part of a vow made to God,” said a devotee, Mahewshwar Amatya.

It is a belief that placing lit oil lamps on themselves brings good luck and helps them get rid of their sins.

Devotees lie for up to six hours with their relatives beside them during the ritual.
